Relaxation Responses of Cavernous Smooth muscles to Vasodilators in Impotent Patients with Hypercholesterolemia or Hypertriglyceridemia

Abstract
To investigate the relaxation of cavernosal smooth muscles in impotent patients with hypercholesterolemia(hyper-C) or hypertriglyceridemia(Hypr-RG) in response to endotheliumdependent or endothelium-independent vasodilators, the erectile response
to
intracavernous injection of papaverine and the relaxation response of isolated cavernous smooth muscles were observed. The erectile response in the patients with hyper-C (n=13) or Hyper-TG(n=104) did not differ from that of the impotent men
without
abnormal lipid metabolism (control group; n=273). The relaxation responses to acetylcholine, adenosine and bradykinin of tissue (n=5) from impotent patients with hyper-C were less pronounced than those of the tissues from the control group
(n=15),
but
there was no significant diference between the two groups in the relaxation response to papaverine or verapamil. The cavernous tissues(n=6) from the impotent patients with hyper-TG showed no difference from the control tissues in the relaxation
response
to either the endothelium-dependent or the endothelium-independent vasodilator. In conclusion, hyper-C is associated with impaired endothelium-dependent relaxation of cavernosal smooth muscle in man, whereas hyper-TG alone may not be associated
with
such impairment.
